Project management glossary

What is a workflow?

In project management tools, a workflow is the set of statuses an item moves through and the transitions allowed between them, from creation to completion.

A simple workflow is To do, In progress, Done. Real teams add stages such as In review or Blocked, and rules about who can move work and what must be filled in first.

Workflow rules

Advanced tools attach conditions, validators, screens and post functions to transitions. These enforce the team's definition of done and automate follow up steps.
