Sprint planning is the meeting at the start of a sprint where the team agrees on a sprint goal and chooses the backlog items it will deliver.
The product owner brings the highest priority items from the backlog, and the team decides how much it can take on, often using past velocity and story point estimates as a guide. The result is a sprint goal and a sprint backlog.
Tips for better planning
- Refine the backlog before the meeting, not during it.
- Plan for less than full capacity to absorb surprises and time off.
- Break stories into sub-tasks so progress is visible.
