What is a task dependency?

A task dependency is a relationship where one task cannot start or finish until another task has started or finished.

The most common type is finish to start: task B cannot begin until task A is done. Others are start to start, finish to finish and start to finish.

Why they matter

Dependencies decide the order of work and the critical path. Hidden dependencies are a leading cause of missed deadlines, so write them down.

Link issues with "blocks" and the Gantt chart draws the dependency, warns about conflicts and can move dependent work when a date changes.
