Project management glossary

What is a milestone?

A milestone is a significant point or event in a project, such as a launch or approval, used to mark progress rather than to represent work.

Milestones have no duration. They are checkpoints: "Beta ready", "Contract signed", "Go live". On a Gantt chart they are usually drawn as diamonds.

Good milestones

  • Are clearly done or not done.
  • Matter to stakeholders.
  • Are spaced so progress is visible regularly.
