What is an org chart?

An organisational chart shows the structure of a company or a team: who leads which group and how the groups relate. Most org charts are trees, with the top role at the root and teams branching below it. They help new people find their way and make responsibilities clear when things change.

What is in the template

The template shows a product organisation. A head of product leads an engineering lead, a design lead and a product manager. Engineering has backend and frontend teams, design has research and UI design, and the product manager looks after analytics.

How to build your org chart

1. Start at the top with the role that leads the group you are charting.
2. Add direct reports one level at a time.
3. Group people into teams rather than listing everyone, unless the group is small.
4. Tidy the chart with the tree layout after each change.
5. Add the date. Org charts go out of date quickly.

Tips

• Chart roles and teams, not only names, so the chart survives people moving.
• For who does what on a project, a RACI matrix is clearer than an org chart.
• Keep the chart in the team's docs, so new hires find it on their first day.
