A stakeholder is anyone who is affected by a project or can affect it, such as customers, sponsors, users, team members and other departments.
Identifying stakeholders early helps a project manager understand needs, manage expectations and avoid late surprises. A simple grid of interest against influence shows who to involve closely and who to keep informed.
Keeping stakeholders informed
- Share a roadmap rather than task lists.
- Report progress against milestones.
- Use a RACI matrix to agree who decides.
